Honestly Rob: Let’s Hop in the Limo with Eric Packer

Since the words, “’I'm playing one of those masters-of-the-universe types…” left Rob’s mouth during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bostongirl and I have been anxiously awaiting something, anything to come out about Cosmopolis. Then, finally last week, the trailer arrived. But honestly Rob, it wasn’t at all what we expected.

I think Bostongirl and I were both in a state of shock. We watched the trailer on a continuous loop for nearly half an hour just trying to make sure we really saw what we thought we just saw. Of course, as usual, we were attached at the bluetooth while we were watching this and I swear the entire conversation was filled with nothing but gasps and a slew of…

“Did she just… Was he really… Did you see… Did he just… Was that a… Oh my god was he… Did he really…Whoa…!”

After our extended repeat viewing, we still didn’t have the answers to any of our questions. We needed more. We needed screen caps and gifs. Patiently, we waited for them to hit internet. Ok, that’s a lie. We’re never patient when Rob’s involved.

When they finally arrived and we had the entire trailer spread out before us, in a lovely arrangement of Eric Packer snippets, broken down frame by frame, we could really inspect, dissect, and get a true picture of what was before us. But even with thousands of still frames confirming what we were seeing, we were still sort of in a state of denial. Each still frame was even more outrageous than the last.

There were gunshouts, and limo sex, and urinating, and rats, OH MY!

This, this is good! Shirtless Rob is always a win.

Bostongirl: I think I need a wider screen shot of this… and moved down… a little… to the right, just sayin’.

Krysti: Wider? Why? Oh… OH!! Yes, down and to the right. Yep, that would be a nice angle.

But then things started to get crazy. There was a bar, a gunshot through the hand, some crazy limo sex and then this… what the hell is this?

Bostongirl: Well, THERE’s something I never thought I’d see Rob doing.

Krysti: There are a lot of things I’ve imagined him doing with that in his hand, peeing in a limo isn’t one of them.

Bostongirl: I wonder if he peed on the floor of the limo before or after they had sex in it.

Krysti: Ewww!

This wasn’t in the trailer but I had to put this in because this makes me see that he definitely is “… playing one of those masters-of-the-universe types”.

Bostongirl: When I look at this, I can totally see Fifty and Mrs Robinson.

Krysti: Oh yeah, Fifty with the crisp white dress shirt, those smoldering eyes and that naughty smirk… wait, did you say Mrs. Robinson? Oh, I didn’t even notice there was a woman in this picture. I have a Rob track mind.

Krysti: There are two things in this world that truly scare me, rats and Rob getting a bad haircut. This scene was the cause of my real life nightmare… The Comic Con Hair Debacle of 2011.

Bostongirl: I know this movie’s not supposed to be a tear-jerker but I think I better bring box of tissues. This scene alone is going to have Krysti in tears.

Krysti: I think you’re right. Just seeing this picture is making me want to cry.

And if all of that doesn’t entice you to see this movie, this definitely should. What better way to get people to the theater than to put Rob’s beautiful face on the movie poster. Lookin’ good, Mr. Pattinson! Lookin’ very good!

Honestly Rob, we can’t wait to see this movie. We’re sure it’s going to be very sexy, totally outrageous and even a little scary but don’t worry, not even rats and bad haircuts could keep us away. We’d never miss one of your movies. Just like always, we’ll be first in line on opening night. We fell madly in love with Edward, you’re the ONLY Jacob we could ever adore, and we can’t wait to hop in a limo and take this crazy ride with Eric.

Honestly,
The Devoted Duo

Book Review: Cosmopolis

Title: Cosmopolis

Author: Don Delillo

Pages: 209

Publisher: Scribner

Date Published: 2004 (paperback)

Summary: It is an April day in the year 2000 and an era is about to end. The booming times of market optimism — when the culture boiled with money and corporations seemed more vital and influential than governments — are poised to crash. Eric Packer, a billionaire asset manager at age twenty-eight, emerges from his penthouse triplex and settles into his lavishly customized white stretch limousine. Today he is a man with two missions: to pursue a cataclysmic bet against the yen and to get a haircut across town. Stalled in traffic by a presidential motorcade, a music idol’s funeral, and a violent political demonstration, Eric receives a string of visitors — experts on security, technology, currency, finance, and a few sexual partners — as the limo sputters toward an increasingly uncertain future. (Summary via GoodReads)

Review: Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis is a surreal journey through Manhattan that takes place over the course of a day through the eyes and thoughts of the lead character, Eric Packer. The entire day takes place largely in his high-tech, exorbitant white limousine.  The potential for a less-than-exciting storyline is immense here, but DeLillo pulls it off.  His writing is smart and sharp, the prose both flowing and jarring, sometimes simultaneously.  He forces you to pay attention to the details or be forever lost.  You cannot idly read this book, you have to work for it.

The first time I tried reading Cosmopolis, I did not make it past the first twenty pages.  The words rolled past me, seemingly in stuccato bursts, observations, thoughts, actions and descriptions…all flying past me too quickly to comprehend.  When I forced myself to slow down and absorb each sentence before moving on to the next, I found the rhythm of DeLillo’s prose. With that rhythm, I began to enjoy the book.

Packer is a unique character- conflicted, intelligent, powerful, cruel, and somewhat nihilistic.  Getting inside his head, seeing how he thinks, how he acts and how he reacts, is the beauty of DeLillo’s writing in Cosmopolis.  He makes you want to come along for the ride and see what happens to Eric Packer as he self-destructs through the course of a single day and mission- to get a haircut.  DeLillo makes you want to understand why Packer sets himself on the trajectory that he does.

After having read the book, I am looking forward to seeing how David Cronenberg lays this out on the silver screen. I’m also curious to see how Robert Pattinson does with the lead role of Eric Packer.  At first blush, I think he will be a perfect match.

Steve_s2001 Talks Cosmopolis Film Experience

Guest Blog from Steve_s2001, a photographer who covered the Toronto filming of Cosmopolis and who a few of our staff met while hanging out on set in Canada, hoping to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson.  All photos used in this blog are credit to him.

It’s been a fun and yet crazy experience covering Robert Pattinson while he has been in Toronto filming his new movie Cosmopolis. Though it has brought many, many late nights it has totally been worth it. This is the third time I have covered Rob. The first time I covered him was a couple of years ago when he was in Toronto promoting the first Twilight movie. The second time was last year in LA when I had the pleasure to attend the Twilight Eclipse premiere.

This time around there were many opportunities for both the fans and the photographers to see Rob up close and personal. Production started on May 23rd; I still can remember the first Sunday that Cosmopolis filmed on Victoria Street. Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Kevin Durand, and director David Cronenberg were spotted filming a scene in a restaurant. Word spread quickly through the fans. Before you knew it, the streets were filled with fans and onlookers trying to get a glimpse of Rob. There were many memorable moments on set , but my favorites include: the filming of the scenes where Rob gets attacked by a guy throwing a pie in his face, and then, the next night when Rob filmed a gun scene involving Kevin Durand’s character.

Throughout filming Cosmopolis, Rob has been absolutely great with his fans. Unfortunately, Rob couldn’t stop every night and meet his fans, but at the very least he would end his night with a wave and acknowledgement of thanks for coming out. On the last night of location filming on Temperence Street -something truly remarkable happened. The location was leaked online so this drew the most fans to the set. Late in the night, there was a surprise visit from Kristen Stewart who brought along Rob’s dog, Bear. Though most people didn’t see her I was lucky enough to capture a few shots of her arriving on set. Finally around 5:00 am the filming for the night wrapped. There were around 50-70 fans who all hoped Rob would come over to sign autographs. To every one’s surprise Rob walked out of his trailer and came over to his fans to sign autographs. Despite the fact that he’d worked all night, he took the time to talk with every one of his fans who had waited countless hours for him. Everyone left happy and for most of us the experience was totally overwhelming.

In the end, I’d just like to repeat what I said on Twitter (@Steve_s2001) ; after seeing Rob sign and talk to over 50 fans at 5:00 am I have so much respect for him. He’s a class act and a true star. Most other stars wouldn’t even take the time to deal with that many fans- especially at that time of the day. I also had the pleasure of meeting so many cool fans on set who I have had the good fortune to become good friends with. I have to say that Rob fans truly are the best and it was so much fun hanging out with all of them.

I hope everyone enjoyed my tweets and pics I posted on Twitter. My plan was to keep everyone updated on what was going on. Thank you so much for the positive comments and responses. It’s been an absolute pleasure. Hopefully, David Cronenberg will premiere Cosmopolis at next year’s 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Then all of us in Toronto, will get another glimpse of Robert Pattinson and finally see this much anticipated movie.

Partying w/ Packer – Cosmopolis Set Visit

I knew this was going to be a fun birthday when I boarded the plane for Toronto. How often do you get a chance to combine work, pleasure and partying all rolled into one fabulous weekend with friends? I’d had some productive business meetings,  great fun with my friends and I’d spent the previous night partying until 4 am celebrating my birthday with the girls. The icing on my delicious birthday cake would be if I could get a chance to see Rob Pattinson filming scenes for Cosmopolis. I’d already missed one opportunity to see him film the first night I arrived and there hadn’t been any outdoor shooting since then.

The Birthday Wish gods must have been smiling on me.

The morning after my birthday carousing, I sat chatting with my friend on the phone, when I heard this crazy commotion of doors slamming and hollering downstairs.  Suddenly, I hear Debbie yell, “they’re filming outside today.. There are pictures on the web from this morning”. I quickly got off the phone and dashed downstairs. The room was filled with a buzz as they were all talking at once trying to figure out the filming location. Once the location was determined, we gathered our thoughts, clothing and coffee and headed out the door.

As we drove through the area, we spotted the telltale signs of a film shoot; rental and movie trucks, large crowds and enormous luxurious trailers. We found the site and the air was filled with a buzz… ‘who’s in this?’ ‘what are they filming?’ ‘what’s going on?’ There was a small crowd of about 25 people shuffling past -some staying to watch and others moving on. The Red Sox (my home team) were playing the Blue Jays next door so many of those meandering by were wearing baseball clothing and didn’t stay for long. We spotted Rob and his costar, Kevin Durand across the wide street and under the shade of the building.  Between us and them was the big production marked by streets lined with cars with NYC license plates, extras dressed in business attire and the many professionals it takes to keep the filming going.

We spent the next 45 minutes watching them film brief snippets and then break and reshoot the same scene. After they broke for lunch, we then headed to ‘Eric Packer’s’ trailer and waited with hopes of seeing Rob come out after eating his lunch to return to the set. That didn’t happen, because they literally packed Rob and his trailer up and moved en masse to a new location. Fortunately for us, one of the construction workers on set was willing to tell us the location for the afternoon shoot. What followed was hours of sitting on a street ledge patiently waiting to see Rob dash in and out of a building  for 3 seconds at a time. The fun became watching the shoes on the other side of the trailer for signs of movement. We soon learned that Dean’s shoes were brown and when those shoes went into the trailer, Rob would usually emerge a few minutes later.  Who would have guessed that I’d travel to Toronto and  spend an afternoon laughing and watching shoes with my friends .

In the end, I was awarded with the most delicious birthday treat; Rob donning the Eric Packer suit, wearing those amazing dark sunglasses and flashing that charming smile.

Here are some of the pictures I captured while watching the filming on June 12th.
