Few movies have been the target of such interest, debate, and release date debacle as Robert Pattinson’s new movie Bel Ami. The movie, which features co-starring roles from Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci, depicts the deceptive rise of main character Georges Duroy (Pattinson). Duroy is an impoverished young man who reaches the peaks of the French hierarchy by sleeping with increasingly powerful women.
This movie is a drastic turn from some of Pattinson’s more popular roles, like Twilight character Edward Cullen, but does align with his roles in similar dramatic films. Pattinson has played the role of seducer in this past Aprils Water For Elephants and showed his dramatic chops in 2010’s Remember Me. Though these movies were greeted with mixed reviews and had some critics doubting Pattinson’s dramatic prose, a large number of outlets praised his bold choices and desire to redefine himself as an actor, and major Hollywood leading man.
This movie also indicates a major leap for Pattinson, he is playing a very unlikeable character. This is the first time in his acting career that he will actually play a villain like role, and according to his costars, he does so with reckless abandon and great success.
Fan sites and Hollywood blogs have been keeping a close eye on Bel Ami’s journey from indie film to, hopefully, major national release. Latest reports indicate that the movie has finished production and is just awaiting final editing and major studio approval. The release date of the movie has been pushed back countless times and the actual date is still up for debate. Several sites indicate that the film is expected to, finally, be released in October of this year.
Few movie still photos have been released including one which depicts Pattinson leaning into kiss, a very willing, Uma Thurman. The photo also features a popular tagline of the movie that describes the characters inhabiting “a world where sex is power and celebrity an obsession, and where politics and media jostle for influence.”
All modern parallels aside, with a strong cast and potentially very believable performance by Pattinson this little indie –movie that could has potential to be Pattinson’s first major critical success outside of the Twilight Saga.
More news and trailers to follow upon their release.
